A Card Bounced, So She Paid For Her Shopping

October 11, 2026•1 min read

Becky moved to a new neighbourhood ten months ago, and she'd been praying for a new friend there.

One day she was at the local market, weighing some veg, and got chatting to a woman next to her. Becky shot up a quick, quiet prayer.

Then she bumped into the same woman again at the checkout. The woman's card was declined.

Becky paid for her shopping there and then.

The woman was an artist. She owns a small studio right by Becky's house.

They're going to meet up for coffee.

That's the whole story so far and we don't know yet whether it leads anywhere.

I love it anyway!

We can treat "Come" moments like they only count once someone's said yes to Jesus, or joined a church, or taken some big obvious step.

But most of the time, Come starts smaller than that. It starts with someone getting seen at a checkout.

Becky didn't wait to find out if this woman was "open" before she acted.

She prayed a two-second prayer over a stranger weighing carrots, then acted on the opportunity right in front of her a few minutes later.

We don't get handed a sign that says "this one's ready." We just get a woman at a till with a declined card, and a decision about whether we notice. It's a split second thing - but it works best - and we work best - when our hearts are prepared.

So are you ready?

Most of the best doors I've walked through started exactly like this: small, ordinary, and with no idea yet how the story ends.

Let's go make disciples.
