The One Question That Got Three People Baptised

September 13, 20262 min read

I loved this story from a few weeks ago in the Community. Clive struck up a conversation with a guy in the sauna. It moved quickly onto spiritual things, and by the end of it the guy said, "Well, I want to be baptised, and I want to be born again."

Clive was amazed. Normally, he said, he'd have then gone through the gospel carefully, made sure the guy understood everything, made sure he was ready before doing anything about it.

This time he decided not to rush. He wanted to see if there was anyone else around this guy who could be gathered in too.

So instead of moving straight to a decision, they met up and did a Discovery Bible Study together. At the end of it Clive asked him one question: "Is there anyone else you could invite into this?"

The answer came straight away. "Definitely. My mum would love it, and my sister as well, maybe even my brother."

The following week his mum and sister joined them. Over the next three weeks the four of them went through a baptism study together, and on a recent Sunday, Clive baptised all three of them. "They are absolutely on fire for God," he said.

I love the difference that one question made.

But the bible shows us that again and again people come to Christ in groups. In fact only three people in the NT got saved on their own!

Because Clive's thinking had changed - he had an expectation that there might be others that God was working on too.

So next time someone tells us they're interested in the things of Jesus, or that something's changing in them, or that they want to take a step of faith, ask them: is there anyone else who would like to learn about this?

Who's the last person you discipled on their own, when there might have been two or three more people in their world who were also ready? Maybe it's not too late to ask them!

Let's go make disciples.
